The Varendra Research Museum houses a one-of-a-kind Bengali art collection that is rich in history, antiquity, rarity, and aesthetic specimens. This Museum in Rajshahi City is Bangladesh’s oldest museum. The Varendra Research Society and Museum is the premier institution of its kind in the country as well as one of the earlier museum in the Indian Subcontinent. It is a leading museum of the South-East Asia. Three eminent intellectuals Kumar Sarat Kumar Ray (1876-1945), Akshay Kumar Maitra (1861-1930) and Rama Prasad Chanda (1873-1942) founded the museum in 1910 as its principal promoters, patrons, leaders and operators on a purely private initiative without any government patronage.
The land of Varendra was one of the most flourished territories of ancient Bengal. There are many more invaluable archaeological ruins and art-evidences which are signs of human settlement scattered in this area.
So, far collecting, preserving and displaying the source materials – archaeological and literary – for study and research in the history , art and architecture of ancient and medieval Bengal in general and Varendra region in particular – the Varendra Research Museum was established. It is a leading Museum of the South-East Asia.
This museum has a very rich collection and we are proud that it is in our city. We can come with family and friends and learn a lot about our heritage.
Varendra Research Museum is one of the most important museums in Bangladesh. Though I feel concern about the maintenance and expansion of the space since it can display more valuable collection that can be good source of knowledge and research too.
I come here very often to see the collection. I want to know more detail about all the items on display, it would be good to have some more description to inform us about these amazing valuable items.
This is one of my favorite places for my research, I come and spend hours during day time and it helps in my thesis recently.
It is a great place to bring my kids where they can learn about so many things and also can run around the garden and open spaces. My kids love to come and see all the Surya Sculptures and wants to learn more about it.
I mostly come here with my elder brother who is a professor and I love sending time here and see all these amazing things on display. it is very rich and resourceful.
I love this museum and the collection. I want to study in Art history and this Museum inspires me a lot. I recommend everyone to pay a visit.
This Museum is one of a kind and a matter of honor for the country. But the maintenance and out reach is not taken under proper concern. I would like to address authorities to take things more seriously and understand the potential of such rich Museum in Bangladesh.
